Lewis Lake

Jordan has being itching to go fishing for a few weeks now. We have tried streams, gone back to Yellowstone Lake but are not having much luck. Jo rd called the back country office to see if they had any tips. I guess since it has been so hot the fish are going out to the deep parts of water in the middle of the lake. They said we might have some luck if we went to the Lewis channel off of Lewis lake. This lake is in on the very south side of Yellowstone National Park. We haven't been there yet so we decided to give it a try and explore a little bit.

We decided to leave late in the afternoon, check into the campground and then scout for a good spot. Our plan was to try to sunrise fish. On the map Lewis lake looks like a little pond, as we pulled around a corner this massive lake appeared. It was overcast and gloomy but every green tree and plant were so vibrant. Like they were all glowing neon. With the mix of the huge expanse of water in front of us, the perfect lighting and nature we were in heaven.

The campground was up on a little hill above the lake, hidden in the trees. For $12.00 you can't complain. It was starting to rain as we were looking for the perfect site. As soon as we parked we hurried to get the tarp on and of course the minute it was all strapped on the rain stopped. Not even one more drop fell the entire time we were. Before it got dark we headed down to the lake. As we walked along the shore the prettier this place got. It was everything you would envision Montana to be. It was absolutely perfect, not another soul around. We had to climb up a little mountain, over fallen trees. They were decaying in the coolest way... as if the earth was slowing swallowing them. We found a little beach at the farthest south side of the lake. Across the channel from us was a little steam pot, there were layers of mountains and tress and birds all around us. Jordan fished for a little while trying to figure out what would be best for tomorrow morning. As it was getting dark I told him we had better get going before we become grizzly dinner. He just kept casting away just trying to catch one fish. After a little more urging he said, "Ok, but just one more catch." I laughed and thought in my head 'sure babe one more cast is going to catch you a fish.' Then the second after he threw the line out he got a hit. It was a 12 inch little fish. I was in awe, but then sighed with a smile on my face because that is Jordan. If there was anyone to catch a fish on his last catch, it will always be Jordan.

Love this man, one of my favorite pictures.

I had fun playing with the camera while Jordan fished

Look at the tree to the right of the tall one,
we couldn't figure out how it was still attached!

We went back to the campsite to relax and maybe get some sleep before sunrise and realized that we had forgotten to bring firewood. We always forget it, every time. We were determined though so we scavenged the empty campsites and the forest. We ended up with a decent amount but it was all a little damp from the rain. It took us about thirty minutes but we got a really nice fire going. We ate dinner and just enjoyed being out in nature. The sky cleared up and there were so many stars out. It was incredible.

At 6am we hiked down to the lake and it was so foggy. We could barely see twenty feet in front of us. And you could not even see half way across the lake. It was eerie but incredibly beautiful. All the plants were so green. All morning til about 10:30 the fog stayed so thick. A couple of times we heard the voices of kayakers but never could see them. At one point we were just sitting there enjoying the scenery and we heard a "whoooooosh.....whoooooooshhhhhhh" over our heads, like a huge loud wind. As we looked up to see what the heck it could possibly be, a huge bald eagle flew right over us. It was amazing. We had no luck in terms of fish but the experience was incredible. We probably would have stayed another night but our boss was taking us out for an employee dinner so we had to head back to town.

My favorite little pond.....

It is crazy to think that we only have three weeks left here. There are so many places left to see, so much to explore. Honestly, we haven't even seen Old Faithful yet. Ha! It doesn't surprise me one bit though... we never make it to the main attraction of places. I am pretty sure next year we will go though. We are excited to get back on the road.

It's easier to leave knowing that we will be back next year. And lot easier to leave when you know this beautiful place is about to be -32 degrees and covered in 120 inches of snow!!!!
