Driving Day

The blizzard nearly knocked Amarillo off it's rocker! We walked into Walmart the day after the first wave hit and noticed that something was a little off. First of all there was a sign on the door that said the store was closing at 4pm- highly unusual for a 24 hour store. Then as we walked through the maze of abandonned shopping carts we noticed that the shelves were nearly empty. People were running around like it was the end of the world, gathering all the last minute supplies. We hurried to get some gallons of water and a bottle of wine as it was already 4:15pm. As we entered the checkout line we noticed the name tag of the cashier, "STORE MANAGER" 25-years with Walmart. We looked at each other and kind of giggled. Why was the store manager checking us out? Why did the store feel like it was falling apart right in front of us? We asked him once we were actually at the register why he was the one up here.... he responded with the fact of only 10 out of 140 employees showed up for work this morning. Apparently the 16 inches of snow scared everyone in the whole town. Even the snow plows weren't prepared for it. So the poor 10 people that acutally could make it to work had to make up for the rest of the crew and work insanely hard. I'm sure they were relieved when they heard the store wouldn't have to stay open all night.

We ended up being trapped in the parking lot for three days as the storm continued to pour down on us. We had fun though, just watched movies, played video games, read, did some writing, and spent lots of time together. It was a perfect little winter getaway. Our heater worked great so we were nice and cozy.

By day three we were excited to get back on the road. From here we are planning to drive to Albuquerque. We have a couple of errands to run there before we head up to Rio Rancho (about 20 minutes away) to visit our friends Danny and Abby from Kauai.

The wind was making awesome patterns in the snow
